Mohammed Babangida: From Nigeria To Switzerland

Mohammed Babangida was educated at exclusive Aiglon College in Switzerland. The school, which was founded in 1949 by John C. Corlette is based upon a philosophy not only of quality education, but also of spiritual and physical health and development. To implement this philosophy, the school provides a wide range of sports activities.

Mohammed Babangida took full advantage of the physical activities while he studied at Aiglon College and he continued this interest in sport and physical fitness in his career as an international businessman.

A native of Nigeria, Mohammed Babangida did not see much of snow or skiing during his early years. But as soon as he enrolled in Aiglon he immediately joined the Aiglon College Ski Club and quickly excelled winning a coveted “colour” award. He subsequently distinguished himself in the sport of skiing by becoming a member of the Aiglon Ski Racing Team in which he not only participated but also worked organizing ski races.

A natural all-around athlete, Mohammed Babangida excelled at tennis, basketball and track and field. Beginning his sports career as a 15 year old he participated in sports at Aiglon each year of his education and in his upper sixth term was appointed captain of the basketball, tennis and track teams.

Mohammed Babangida still holds the Swiss junior record for the javelin throw.

Because of the quality of the athletic program at Aiglon College, Mohammed Babangida not only was a fierce competitor on the field, but he also became a student of each sport that he played. He was a great admirer of Michael Jordan, the American basketball legend and a fan of the Rafael Nadal, the Spanish tennis star.
